It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking In the dark
Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream, but terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes
You're paralyzed
Cause this is thriller, thriller night
And no one's gonna save you from the beast about to strike
You know it's thriller, thriller night
You're fighting for your life inside a killer Thriller tonight
Explanation:
1st line: “It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark”
The story “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne starts in the sunset. The main character, Young Goodman Brown, is leaving his wife in the evening for a mystifying journey through the forest. The beginning of the song explains the setting and the mood of the dull story. Usually night time is the time when all dark forces get activated.
Also, Goodman Brown is going to participate in a strange meeting in the woods that is going to happen at about midnight. The association of devil and midnight is emphasized in the first line of the song.
Young Goodman Brown is so terrified of his trip that he is even afraid of his shadow and feels devil’s presence everywhere he goes: “There may be devilish Indian behind every tree”, said Goodman Brown to himself and he glanced fearfully behind him as he added, “What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!”
2nd line: “Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart”
Goodman Brown feels insecure during the whole trip. He has hallucinations, such as voices, creepy figures along his trip and all those scary things frighten him a lot: “The whole forest was peopled with frightful sounds – the creaking of the trees, the howling of wild beasts, and the yell of Indians.”
3rd line: “You try to scream, but terror takes the sound before you make it”
He tries to resist the devil: “With heaven above and Faith below, I will yet stand firm against the devil!” cried Goodman Brown. He wants to prove himself that he is courageous, but he is weak and helpless: “Young Goodman Brown cried out and his cry was lost to his ear by its unison with the cry of the desert.”
4th line: “You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes,
You are paralyzed”
The last line of the song has a figurative meaning. The crucial end of the story is that eventually, young man is losing his wife Faith, and it means that he is losing his faith in life, his inner world and there is no life for him beyond this point. He is paralyzed.
